🧭 Instructions: Create your first simple Traditional Geocache

A traditional geocache is the classic form of geocaching: You hide a container in a specific location and publish the coordinates online. Perfect as your first cache: Here's how:

1. 📍 Location selection

Important: The location must be publicly accessible, safe, and legal. Make sure of this:

  • No private property without permission.
  • Not a nature reserve or military area.
  • The location should be interesting, but not too obvious.

💡 Tip: Places with beautiful views, historical significance, or little secrets are especially popular. For example, ruins, viewpoints, or even just the bench along your favorite bike route.

2. 🧱 Selecting the container

Anything is possible here. The following containers are best suited for beginners:

✅ Standard options:

  • PETling : The classic – robust, waterproof, ideal for urban or forest hideaways.
  • Film canister : Small, easy to hide, perfect for beginners.
  • Lunchbox: Everyone knows it, everyone has one. The classic waterproof lunchbox. Best used in the woods.

🌟 Unique option:

  • Magnetic PETling : For creative hiding places on metal objects (e.g. bridge railings, street signs).
  • Camouflage hiding places: Magnetic screws are perfect in the city.

3. 📝 Prepare the logbook

A logbook is mandatory! You can:

  • Use a small notebook.
  • Ready-made log strips or logbooks (also available from us).
  • Use templates for printing (only use a laser printer here, as ink is not waterproof)

💡 Tip: Log strips/books in zip-lock bags last longer.

4. 🎁 Cache contents

For small caches, the logbook is sufficient. For larger ones, you can:

  • Add small items for trading (e.g., figurines, buttons, keychains).
  • No food (even unpackaged) or dangerous items!!!

5. 🛠️ Camouflage & Placement

Hide the cache so that it:

  • It doesn't immediately catch the eye.
  • It is protected from the weather and curious Muggles.

Examples:

  • Under roots, in tree hollows, behind street signs (for magnetic PET bottles).

6. 🌐 Published on Geocaching.com

Create a listing:

  • Title, description, notes.
  • Assess the level of difficulty and the terrain.
  • Specify exact coordinates.
  • Optional: Spoiler image or explanatory text.

💡 Tip: Be creative with your description – this will make your cache more attractive!

7. 🔍 Care & Maintenance

As the owner, you are responsible for:

  • Regular checks.
  • Exchange the logbook when full.
  • Replace the cache if it is damaged.
